Never Mind

I don't even know exactly how it started, but somewhere along the line, some kid called to the front of the car for my attention and then ended up saying, "Never mind." Grier picked up on the fact that it's a great way to get my attention, even when you have nothing else to say, so she started to do it on purpose.

I hadn't realized that I always respond the exact same way, until Bristol started imitating me. I pretty much always say, "Hey you!" in a way that's supposed to sound exasperated, but to hear Bristol do it, you'd think I was growling at my children in the back of the van.

It's now a game the whole family gets in on. It goes a little something like this.

Big Kids: Hey Bristol!
Bristol: Huh?
Big Kids: Never mind!
Bristol (in a growly voice): Hey you!
(lots of laughing)
Bristol: Mama!
Me: Yeah?
Bristol: Never mind!
Me: Hey you!
Bristol: Yaya! (that's Leah)
Leah: What?
Bristol: Never mind!
Leah: Hey you!
Bristol: Bobo!
Bo: Yeah?
Bristol: Never mind!
Bo: Hey you!
Bristol: Baby! (that's Fletcher)
Fletcher: What?
Bristol: Never mind!
Fletcher: Hey you!
Bristol: Dada!
Bill: What do you need Bristol?
Bristol: Never mind!
Bill: Hey you!

Are you noticing a pattern here? Seriously. That girl would go through this routine fifty times, if we'd keep it up. Usually you can count on Grier butting in somewhere too and doing the whole spiel to Bristol. It's not really anything anyone else probably cares about, but I think it will be something funny to read back on when the kids are all grown and we'll say, "That's right! That was so funny!"
