It started the year Bill and I were first married. I was in the all-day sickness phase of Leah's pregnancy, where even the thought of McDonald's was better than the thought of preparing raw meat myself. So after church, Bill and I had McDonald's fish sandwiches for a buck apiece.
The next year, we were in a hurry after Ash Wednesday service because I had a scrapbooking date with some friends. So again, we had some quick fish sandwiches (still a dollar, at that point, I think) and a tradition was officially born.
Over the years, everything about this tradition has gotten bigger: our family, the size of our order, and the price of the sandwiches. I believe they are now 2 for $3. One regret I have is that we haven't saved our receipts each year. I think that would have been a fun record to keep.
2013 was not a record setting year in the fish sandwich department. Leah wasn't feeling well that day, so one of our biggest eaters was "on the bench" (couch, technically). She just enjoyed a little bit of Sprite.
With Leah not feeling so great, fish sandwiches were enjoyed in the comfort of our own home this year.
And it wouldn't be an Ash Wednesday feast without a Shamrock shake.
