The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks happens to have this "Fitness Passport" that you can pick up in any of their offices. It's a small booklet that contains a one-page description of each state park and recreation area. On each page, there is a small space where you are to place a stamp as evidence you visited that park or recreation area. If there isn't an office or check-in station, then there is a lock box with a stamp in it so you can stamp your own passport. The code for each lock box is listed in the passport. Sounds like a pretty fun summer project, eh?
But wait. There's more! Not only is there this elaborate check list type system that's already made for you, there are prizes. And if there's one thing that motivates me almost as much as a checklist, it's a goofy prize. (Did anybody else save up their Planet Lunch Ploids with a friend in order to purchase a Ploid Safe? Well, I won't name any names, but two young women I know saved up their Ploids when they were in college and did redeem them for a safe.) In the case of the Fitness Passport Challenge, there are different levels of prizes. After 10 parks, you fill out a prize form, take the form and your passport to a GFP office for verification, and then send your form in and anxiously await the arrival of your new water bottle. That's right. A water bottle! While the rest of you are parched and desperately searching for a freshwater source, the Bosler family will be sippin' from their fancy new water bottles. And if there's time and the weather isn't too blazin' hot this year, when y'all are trying to decide what to wear for your next family outing, the Bosler family will be sportin' the new t-shirts they were awarded after they made their 25th park visit.
See you at the South Dakota State Parks!
