Each year, the Spanish Immersion classes put on a program for their families as a way to raise money for hiring interns for the program. The school district provides one Education Assistant to the program each year and all other classroom aides are provided by PASI (Parent Advocates for Spanish Immersion). PASI finds young adults from various Spanish-speaking countries and matches them up with host families here in Sioux Falls. These interns spend the school year interacting with our children and helping teachers in whatever way is most beneficial. The idea is that the more native Spanish speakers our children can interact with on a daily basis, the better. So, the interns live with host families and are paid a small stipend for their time here in the US. The goal is to have intern in every kindergarten classroom and an intern for every two or three classrooms in the higher grades. This Fiesta is where most of the funds come from, so it's kind of a big deal.
Here are some pictures of the program this year:
Bo's class had some of the best costumes, in my opinion. So cute!
Leah's class probably had the most fun making their costumes, though. They got to tie-dye their own t-shirts.
When Leah was in kindergarten, there were five classes total (1 class of second grade, 2 of first, and 2 of kindergarten). Now, that oldest class is in fourth grade (going into fifth since it took me so long to blog this) and there are a total of 12 classes! This fall will make 15!
Seeing Grandma Rita wouldn't be complete without digging through her purse for "noot nacks!" That would be "fruit snacks" for those of you who aren't fluent in Grier-speak.
